Alternative Therapies
Alternative and complementary therapies are readily available and widely used to help relieve menopausal symptoms. For example, red clover, black cohosh, ginseng and soy-based foods which contain phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens are plant based substances that are similar to estrogen. Many of these are still being studied and their possible benefits and risks are not yet fully understood.
It is important to tell your doctor, nurse or pharmacist about any alternative remedies you may decide to take, in case they interact with any other medicines you have been prescribed.
Some commonly used alternative therapies are listed below:| Red Clover | Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) |
| Black Cohosh | Homeopathy |
| Dong Quai | Acupuncture |
| Ginseng | Reflexology |
| Evening primrose oil | Aromatherapy and massage |
You can find more information on alternative therapies in the ‘Living with the menopause’ booklet.
