Lifestyle Advice

The menopause is a good time to review your lifestyle, and that of your family. A healthy lifestyle is particularly important for women who are going through the menopause, as it will help to reduce the increased risk of coronary heart disease and osteoporosis, associated with the menopause.

Guidance on lifestyle:

  • Eat healthy, well-balanced meals low in saturated fat
  • Eat more fresh fruit and vegetables (at least 5 portions per day)
  • Limit your salt intake to less than 6g a day
  • Limit your alcohol intake to less than 14 units a week (around 7 glasses of wine or 5 pints of lager)
  • Make sure you are getting enough calcium to help protect your bones and teeth
  • Stop smoking
  • Take regular exercise e.g. 30 minutes a day of brisk walking or swimming

Ask your doctor, nurse or pharmacist if you are unsure about how to achieve any of these lifestyle goals.
